We got the boot stripe and bottom paint finished up on Saturday. Vernon set up a tent and sprayed our windshield on today. All thats left is to spray the deck, put the name and guard rail on, and clean up the mess. Hopefully we’ll be back in the water on Thursday.

They got the cabin painted last night and me and Big Al painted the bottom today. The only thing we have to do now is paint the deck and reattach the hardware. I also attached a picture of the obsession which is just about finished up. They should have him overboard on Monday and hopefully we'll be right behind him on Wednesday or Thursday.

The hull turned out great! I know its hard to tell in the pictures but if you look closely you'll notice we went with a slightly darker color called whisper gray . The topside is going to stay matterhorn white, white with a touch of gray, as usual. The bridge has already been sanded and will hopefully be primed over the weekend.

The Work Continues

We went out of town to visit family over Thanksgiving. When we returned Vernon and crew had already primed the hull. They spent today doing a lot of fine sanding hoping to be ready for topcoat by Wednesday night. Things really seem to be coming along quickly. I got the fighting chair broken down, sanded, and ready for primer this morning and spent the afternoon sanding and painting below deck so that we can put our new mufflers in tomorrow.

We spent the morning getting the boat set up in the shop and now its time for the real fun to start. We’ve got the letters and all the guard removed. Then came the bottom. God bless Benito and Louis for going to town sanding off 20 years worth of paint.

We finished up the 2011 season and now its time to start to work repainting the Country Girl. We spent the day removing as much hardware as possible while in the water. Tomorrow we’ll be heading to the boat shop.

We started the day down to the south with the rest of the fleet. The tuna seemed to be just about nonexistent throughout the morning. Around 12:30 a couple of boats started to find a few fish about 20 mile to the north. It was a tough decision but we decided to make the long run up and hope for the best. As soon as we set out we hooked up on 4 nice tuna. After about an hour and half of fast action we managed to end the day with a dozen.

Although the fishing still isn’t quite up to par for October on the Outer Banks we still ended up with a pretty good day. We had 20 Black Fin Tuna, 3 Dolphin, and ended the day with a nice Sailfish. The moon is starting to fade and i’ve got a good feeling that things are going to start to pick up more and more.

The full moon has been big and bright the past few nights and the tuna have been taking advantage of it. By the time the fleet arrives in the morning the tuna have already filled up. Its obvious that they’re around but they just don’t seem to be hungry. I really believe that the tuna fishing is going to gradually get better as the moon disappears.

Once again with the bright full moon the tuna bite was just about non existent. We did scrap out another decent catch of dolphin and one sailfish. Not a bad day but I sure wish those tuna would start to cooperate.

We had a salty crew of anglers on board today. The rough season didn’t slow them down a bit. We had a nice mix of bailer and gaffer dolphin, two tuna, and three small wahoo.

We didn’t sell enough ticket for our bottom fishing trip this week. I also got a report that the sea bass season south of Hatteras has been closed and the sea bass season north of Hatteras will not reopen until Nov 1st. We’ve decided that we will not run any more bottom trips during the month of Oct since the seasons are closed.

A Slow Day

When we were bottom fishing yesterday we heard some excellent reports for tuna fishing. It sounded like most of the fleet came in early with limits. What a difference one day can make. We set out and hooked a white marlin right out of the gate. We got going again and had 3 tuna bites that pulled off. I thought to myself, no big deal we’ve already had this many bites I’m sure we’ll have a good day. Boy was I wrong. We had one or two more bites the rest of the day and that was it. Definetly one of the slow days of the year for the fleet.

The Sea Bass fishing was great. They closed the season north of Hatteras on Sept 28th. We had to make a longer run than usual to fish south of Hatteras. We had some great fishing but it sounds like they plan on closing the season south of hatteras soon. We’ll be sure to keep everyone posted.

The yellowfin tuna fishing seems to be getting better and better. Now if we could just get the weather to straighten out we could be looking at a great fall fishing season. We’ve got bottom fishing scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday and unless we get booked sooner our next trolling trip will be on Saturday.

This is my 4th year mating for my father on the Country Girl and this is the first time I’ve seen a longbill spearfish. I wish we could have gotten the pic a little quicker, he was really lit up pretty. Capt Allan said he’s only seen around 5 or 6 in his 41 years. Congratulations to Castle on landing a rare one and stay safe in Iraq.

A Nice Class of Dolphin

The past few days have been mighty windy. We spent the day looking for marlin but despite the good report from the boats out of virginia beach we didn’t have much luck. We had five other boats in the area and two of them did manage to catch a couple. I think one of our biggest problems was the birds. We had several periods during the day where we couldn’t get a bait in the water without a bird picking it up. We did find a few different places holding some great numbers of nicer bailer and small gaffer dolphin. Unfortunately we could only catch a few at a time before the birds would force us to move on.

We had a bachelor party group charter the boat for a half day trip. It was all the Taylor Bluefish you could want. We also had a few Spanish Mackerel. Although we didn’t have a whole lot of the size to our fish we still had plenty of action and a good time.

Sept 14th - We started off the morning looking for tile fish. There wasn't much to it, so we decided to head further to the south in hopes of finding some seabass. I've got to say that it worked out pretty well. We ended up with a nice box full of bass.

The white marlin bite seemed to slow down just a little bit yesterday. We ended up catching three and our group wasn't that interested in dolphin so we did pass up a few bunches. We'll be bottom fishing the next two days and it looks like a cold front will be coming through for the weekend. Hopefully the whites will pick up after its gone. NE winds are known for bringing in good fishing.
